Customer Review: so far, quite an impressive machine
I bought this machine a couple of weeks ago. It is an upgrade for me from a VERY basic Brother machine. I bought mine at a sewing machine store; actually cheaper than Amazon and I get their expertise/service.

One major feature I was looking for in my new machine is speed control. I am teaching my daughter to sew; this machine can be set to sew very very ssssslllloooww. Great when trying to teach a nine year old. Threading is pretty simple; there is a nifty automatic needle threader. I’m using it but threading a machine needle was never a big deal for me. I also like the automatic needle up feature. On every machine I ever used previously, I had to turn the wheel when done sewing a line to raise the needle. This machine does it automatically.

This Brother makes a very nice buttonhole; not as nice perhaps as a machine twice its price but still, just fine. It has this neat buttonhole foot in which you put your desired button in the back and it uses that button to automatically make the proper sized buttonhole. All in one step. This is WAY better than my old machine.

The bobbin is a top-drop-in. No more bringing up the loop, just put in in and sew.

One feature I’ve yet to use is a front stop/go control button. I guess that if you didn’t want to or couldn’t use a foot pedal you could use this button instead. I can see it being nice for buttonholes; you just position your fabric, push the “go” button, and it makes all the side of the buttonhole and stops automatically.

This machine trys to make things oops-proof. If you’ve ever jambed your machine because you started sewing with the presser foot up, well, that can’t happen with this machine. If things aren’t “right”, it will give you an error beep.

Another nice feature is that the machine automatically sets an “ideal” stitch length/width. You can overide it but for the most part, the defalt is perfect, especially with the decorative stitches.

There are several decorative stiches; I haven’t quite figured out the best way to put them to use but that’s just my own lack of creativity.

One last nice feature is a built-in foot holder. In front of the free-arm is a flip-down compartment that has molded, labeled spots for all your feet. It comes with a standard foot, zipper foot, blind hem stitch foot, decorative stitching foot, overlock foot, button attacher foot, and buttonhole foot. Also in the compartment is a molded space for a seam ripper and 4 bobbins (included). I’ve found it nice to have all these feet in one spot. I have a couple specialty feet from my old Brother machine and they fit and work just fine on my new one. An added plus.

One note; this machine takes bobbins that are a bit thicker than older ones. Buy a bunch of new ones; they say old ones won’t work.

All in all, I’m very happy. I’m glad I went with this model and would buy again.

***edited to add: my one gripe about this machine is that the built in lights are lacking. My old machine put out quite a lot of light; this one is MUCH dimmer.

I like this camera. It was important that it have a view finder in addition to the “screen”. I shoot a lot of dance performances as well as full moon at the beach, flowers, butterflies, birds and scenes with light and dark contrast. Can’t wait to take it on my next trip. I also like that it uses AA batteries vs. the more expensive types. I’m happy.

Ordered my Nikon D40 on Sunday, received it on the following Wednesday… Great service by Amazon. The camera is exceptional! I showed it to a friend of mine, a professional photographer and he was amazed at the camera (he’s a Canon guy) and even more amazed at the price. I have been interested in photography for a long time but haven’t had a SLR since the film days. I am having lots of fun with the D40, its hard to take a bad picture when you use the automatic mode. Since I got the camera I have purchased a UV Filter, Remote Control, Gorillapod and a Crumpler Camera bag and have been doing a lot of reading and experimenting.

Customer Review: Great starter SLR
I am a complete noob when it comes to SLRs. After researching DSLRs for a month or so, I decided on the D40. I am extremely happy with the choice. I’ve bought a D40 book and have been teaching myself how to use it to get the best possible shot. Its easy to use, the menus are self explanitory and easy to navigate. The kit lens that comes with it is a little junky, you’re going to want to upgrade that pretty quickly. My standard kit is a Sigma f/1.4 50mm and a Nikon 55-200 AF VR. I rarely find myself in situations that these 2 lenses wont do what I need them to do.

If you’re looking for a great entry level DSLR, this is the one to get.

I have read all your reviews and it seems that all are satisfied with this Serger. However, there is something that I would want to know since I’ll be giving this as a gift and she lives in different country. How much voltage does it use? 110 volts or 220 volts? Because as far as I know, even if you use an adaptor to change the voltage, it will not last longer than expected. Please help!

Customer Review: Volume control button does not work
I had read the reviews of this product being defective and took the suggestion of a fellow reviewer and ordered from another seller(Cincynow). Well I got a bad one as well. The volume button does not work on the radio. I do not recommend using another reseller as their return policy is not the same as Amazon’s on defective merchandise. You have to pay the shipping to return item. YOu do not get reimbursed by the seller for that additonal shipping charge. However, with Amazon they send you out a paid sticker to re-send the item back in the mail. At least my seller-Cincynow does not reimburse it. I found it very insulting in their email to me that they would have to test it out before they process the refund. If they had tested it out before selling and sending it I wouldn’t have this problem. I won’t make that mistake again.

I needed to replace an old GE clock radio that still worked fine except it was difficult to set the time without it racing through the numbers. I had this clock for years as had my mother before me. It seemed a shame to replace it for just that but as I frequently need to change the wake up time, I decided to look for something else. I also wanted something smaller. I read the mixed reviews on this clock radio and was ambivalent about purchasing it, but as it was the smallest I could find and small is what I needed, I decided to go for it. Upon first look, I could see that it is not built with the same quality as that old GE–the materials seem cheaper, the knobs flimsier. The sound from the radio is fair. The light up dial even on its dimmest is too bright but I am getting used to it–but then I have to turn the face of the clock at an angle so it doesn’t shine right in my face. If you like having a night light, this might work well for you. I have not plugged my MP3 player into it so cannot say how that function performs. It is easy to set the time and I like that. I also like that the snooze button covers the top of the radio so it is easy to get to. I was going to take my old GE to the thrift store but I have decided to hang on to it. I may need it again some day. They don’t make like they used to.

Customer Review: SUPER - until the lens gets stuck, and it will!
I loved this camera for a year then the warranty expired and the lens stuck in the open position and it is not economical to fix. After doing some internet search for a solution I discovered this is a very common problem with dozens of Canon models, it is called error 811, there are entire websites devoted to just this problem. This camera is too expensive to only last a year, I have beautiful photos of the Italian coast, but I won’t be buying another Canon.

June 26 2009: I rate this camera 5 stars. I love this camera. Excellent point-and-shoot camera for photographic numbskulls like me. It is intuitive. The buttons are fine. Bought it a couple weeks’ ago, took it on a camping trip and it was exquisite. Still know only a fraction of what the camera offers and have to sit down with it and learn/experiment more. If I discover later that it has some drawbacks, I’ll edit this review.

I did quite a bit of research looking for a point-and-shoot digital camera to replace our old 2002 Canon Powershot G2 camera which still works fine after 7 years. I wanted a new digital camera, finally narrowing it down to either the Canon Powershot SD970 IS or the Sony DSC-T900.

GOOD THINGS ABOUT CANON POWERSHOT SD970

Surprised at how tiny it is but is big enough for fingers. Superb in low-light (a must-have). It is Macintosh-friendly (a must-have). Of the Canon Powershot ELPH lineup, the SD970 has the largest LCD at 3-inches (as do models 790 & 880); others have only a 2.5- or 2.7-inch LCD. Be sure to buy an SDHC card separately because the camera doesn’t come with one, and in order to operate, there must be an SDHC card inserted (I got a 32GB SDHC card but you can get a 4, 8 or 16GB).

BAD THINGS I READ ABOUT THE SONY DSC-T900 THAT SEALED ITS FATE

The Sony camera comes in a bunch of exterior colors but who gives a hoot what color the outside of the camera? Silver is just fine. Exterior color is fluff. It’s dumb for a company to put resources towards the exterior color of a camera. I care about the innards. Multiple exterior colors: 1 strike against it. Sony doesn’t care about Macintosh, period. Sony is for Windows people only. Sony keeps asking “What’s a Macintosh?”: definitely a major strike against Sony (as a brand). {Raspberry} Reviewers said the DSC-T900 is bad in low-light: another strike against it. Reviewers said that battery sucks: a fourth strike against it. Since it had four strikes against it, I didn’t buy it.
